Each year, nearly 15% of cats and dogs will go missing, and while most are reunited with their owners, many still end up in shelters. Here, you’ll find resources to help find your lost pet or return a found one to its home:
Have you lost your cat or dog?
Losing a pet is heartbreaking, but acting quickly can help. Follow these steps to help find your pet:
- Update microchip info: Contact the microchip company to report your pet lost and verify your contact details. If unsure of the chip company, call the vet or shelter that implanted it.
- Register with Petco Love Lost: Use their national database and facial recognition to help locate your pet.
- Post on Pawboost: Submit a lost pet report to alert locals via email and Facebook. Include a photo.
- Check local shelters daily: Visit in person or online. File a lost report with a photo at these shelters:
- Post on Craigslist & Nextdoor: Share a detailed description (leave out a few unique traits to avoid scams) and a photo.
- Talk to neighbors: For shy or indoor cats, check nearby hiding spots and place their litter box outside.
Have you found a lost cat or dog?
Found a pet with no ID tag? Here’s how to help reunite them with their owner:
- Check for a microchip: Visit a vet or shelter to scan for a chip. If found, the owner can often be contacted right away.
- Post on Petco Love Lost: Use their national database and facial recognition to help reunite the pet with their family
- Post on Pawboost: Upload the pet’s photo and details, and report to the City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department.
- Use flyers: Personalize and post flyers in the area where the pet was found, at local shelters, and community spots.
- Post a classified ad: Use Craigslist and Nextdoor. Always ask for proof of ownership before releasing the pet.
- Can’t care for the pet? If the owner can’t be found, Animal Humane may accept the pet as space allows. Check our Re-homing page for info.
