Adult Volunteers (18+)

Animal Humane offers a number of ways for adult volunteers (18+) to get involved in nearly every aspect of our organization. The list below is just a small sample of how you can help:

  • Walk dogs or socialize cats
  • Receive donations at our Thrift Shop
  • Assist our veterinary staff in the Donor-subsidized Veterinary Clinic
  • Join our educators as they speak to school groups
  • Answer phones and greet potential adopters

You will learn more about the many other ways that volunteers can get involved at our New Volunteer Welcome Session. To start the process of becoming an Animal Humane volunteer, please review the steps listed below under Get Started.

Volunteer Requirements

  • Volunteers for our adult program must be at least 18 years old. (Options are available for volunteers younger than 18; see our Junior Ambassador Volunteers and Children’s Volunteer Opportunities for further details).
  • All volunteers must have internet access and a valid email address.
  • Each of our volunteers receives extensive training, so we ask that all volunteers commit to spending eight hours a month for at least six months with us. If you cannot commit to a long-term volunteer opportunity, short term opportunities are available.
  • Be aware that many volunteer positions require bending, lifting, standing, walking or squatting. In addition, all volunteers must be able to communicate clearly and understand and comply with written and spoken instructions.
  • To ensure the safety of our pets, volunteers and staff members we perform a standard nationwide criminal background check on all potential volunteers. Prior felony convictions may prevent you from volunteering with us.

Junior Ambassador Volunteers (ages 16 & 17)

We are pleased to offer young adults, age 16 and 17, long-term volunteer opportunities (four hours monthly for at least six months) with our organization. Junior Ambassadors may volunteer in a number of different capacities, from answering phones and ringing up sales to assisting at special events.  Please note that only adult (18+) volunteers may work directly with our pets.

Volunteer Requirements

  • Junior Ambassadors must be at least 16 years old and may volunteer independently once they have attended a New Volunteer Welcome Session with a parent or guardian. (Children under 16 must volunteer with a parent; see our Children’s Volunteer Opportunities).
  • All Junior Ambassadors are required to attend a New Volunteer Welcome Session, accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • All volunteers must have internet access and a valid email address.
  • Be aware that many volunteer positions require bending, lifting, standing, walking or squatting. In addition, all volunteers must be able to communicate clearly and understand and comply with written and spoken instructions.
  • If you need to complete a service project for school, please contact the Volunteer Manager . Do not begin the registration process until you have determined that completing the FULL volunteer process is the best option for you.

Ready to get started? Here are the steps you will need to complete:

  1. Watch the video orientation below from the comfort of your own home. At the end of the video, complete the quiz and then enter your application, as outlined in the steps below.
  2. If you are under 18, when we receive your application we will email you additional paperwork that includes parental consent paperwork. Please have this paperwork completed by your parent or guardian. A portion of it will provide permission for Animal Humane to run a background check, a requirement for all of our volunteers.
  3. Send the Junior Ambassador paperwork back to Animal Humane either by emailing it to [email protected] or by physically mailing it to: Junior Ambassador Program–Animal Humane New Mexico–615 Virginia St. SE–Albuquerque, NM 87108
  4. When your paperwork has been received, the New Volunteer team will contact you to sign you and your parent or guardian up for an upcoming Welcome Session.

We cannot wait to see you at a New Volunteer Welcome Session in the future!

Children’s Volunteer Opportunities (ages 6 to 15)

Page Pals is open to youth ages 6 to 15 with parental supervision. Our Page Pals volunteers provide enrichment and reduce stress for cats, while at the same time strengthening reading skills, by reading out loud to our pets in their Real Life Rooms. Human interaction is one of the most important ways we keep our pets happy and healthy and you and your child can be an important part of this work.

How it works:
Kids age 6 to 15 may read to the cats at our Main Campus location with your supervision. Because of the training involved we do ask that you and your child commit to at least six months with the Page Pals program.

Getting Started:

All Page Pals parents will attend a two-hour orientation class, which is geared towards children 10 and older. The parent who comes to the orientation class must be the adult who accompanies the child each time he or she volunteers. To sign up for an orientation class, please follow these steps:

1. Choose an orientation date from the list below. For 2018, dates are available in February, May, August and November. Click on your chosen date and complete the application form.

2. Complete an online nationwide criminal background check by clicking here. All parents must complete a background check prior to attending an orientation class. If the background check process has not been started within a week of signing up for an orientation class, your name will be removed from the class list.

3. An $8.00 non refundable application fee, payable online via the link above, is required of all Page Pals volunteers.

Page Pals is a great way for kids to learn kindness and compassion toward animals and to discover the joys of volunteering. We hope you and your child consider becoming a Page Pals team!

Short Term or Group Volunteer Opportunities

Are you looking for a one-time volunteer opportunity or do you have a group of people who would like to volunteer? We offer events throughout the year where we welcome one-time school and corporate volunteer groups.

  • Doggie Dash and Dawdle, held the first Sunday in November, is our biggest event of the year. We need literally hundreds of volunteers to ensure the success of the event. Large and small groups are welcome and people of most ages may assist at Doggie Dash.
  • Pet Health Fairs are held throughout the year and offer free vaccinations and information to targeted neighborhoods throughout the city. Volunteers are needed for a variety of jobs, including assisting fair attendees with paperwork and answering questions and providing direction to fairgoers.
  • Our Pet Food Bank is open to the public on our Main Campus on Wednesday and Sunday mornings. Small (no more than 4 people) groups are needed to assist with bagging food and keeping the food bank area neat and tidy.

We often hold other special events and have special projects, such as painting or helping to tidy our Thrift Shop, throughout the year. Please contact our Volunteer Manager if you are interested in volunteer opportunities for your group.

Group Volunteer Requirements

  • All members of the group must complete a waiver (if any volunteers in your group are under the age of 18, the waiver must also be signed by a parent or guardian).

In 2017, approximately 428 active volunteers donated 46,273 hours to help the pets in our care, the equivalent of almost 23 full-time employees! Volunteers have been integral to our lifesaving efforts throughout our five-decade history. Thank you!

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Animal Humane New Mexico!

To become a new Animal Humane volunteer, please follow these steps:

Step 1: Watch our “We Are Animal Humane” video orientation below from the comfort of your own home! The video is approximately 20 minutes long. It will introduce you to what our organization does and how volunteers help support our mission. It will help you ensure that our programs are the best fit for your volunteering goals.

At the end of this video you will be prompted to click on a link to a short quiz on information from the orientation. Successful completion of the quiz will unlock our volunteer interest application. Complete that application to move to the next step!

As part of your application you will be acknowledging that you have read and agree to all items in the New Volunteer Paperwork (click to download). Please read all portions of the New Volunteer Paperwork PDF and check the box on the application to indicate that you have read and agree to our volunteer policies and procedures.

Step 2: After receiving your interest application, our Volunteer Department will email you a link to complete a background check using the Verified Volunteers website. All volunteers and staff at Animal Humane are required to complete this nation-wide background check.

Completing this step requires a non-refundable application fee for the cost of the background check. The fee starts at approximately $8 (fee may be higher depending on parameters of the check).

Step 3: Once your background check is completed, you will receive an invitation to our once-monthly New Volunteer Welcome Session! During the Welcome Session you will:

  • Learn more details about being an Animal Humane volunteer
  • Decide on your volunteer position
  • Sign up for any training required to begin in that position
  • Receive your Animal Humane volunteer badge

We cannot wait to see you at an upcoming New Volunteer Welcome Session!
