Pets that cannot be admitted to Animal Humane
• Animals with a history of biting humans or have been attack-trained • A pet showing very aggressive or unsociable behavior during the administration of our temperament testing • Veterinary examination determines that the animal is physically unsuitable for adoption
If your pet has a prior history of biting or demonstrates any aggression, please call 505-938-7900 before you arrive so that we may discuss the behavior and recommend different options with you.
Owner Surrenders
Call 505.938.7900. We will listen to you, provide you with tips and options, and if relinquishment seems the best option, have you bring your pet to our campus for admission. Upon arrival we will talk to you, examine your pet and test your pet's temperament. Please allow at least 30 minutes for this process to occur. We strive to gather as much information about your pet as possible in order to make their stay with us more comfortable, as well as match them with a new family.
To help us understand your pet, please take some time to thoughtfully complete the appropriate questionnaire. Please bring your pet's most recent veterinary records.

If your Pet's status changes
Animal Humane does not place any time limit on an animal's stay. An animal may stay here for as long as necessary to find them a new home with the condition they remain healthy and are adapting well to shelter life. If you want us to notify you if anything changes after you leave your pet with us, please request a Call Back. This service is provided for a $25.00 fee and must be requested by you at the time we admit your pet. Possible changes in our evaluation of your pet's status could come from further physical or temperamental observation and it is determined the animal is unsuitable for adoption. Once we place the call back to you, you will have 24 hours to reclaim your pet or make other arrangements for the animal. An additional boarding fee may be charged, in addition to any medical care provided. We cannot release any animal without spaying or neutering and microchipping. You will be required to pay for this service if necessary.
Strays
Animal Humane also takes in stray cats and dogs found by the public.
INTAKE FEES
$35 for the first pet. $15 for each additional adult animal over 7 months of age. $5 for each additional animal if 6 months or younger.
We will make all attempts to locate the lost animal's owners and reunite the pet with their family. If the owners cannot be located at the time of admission, the following will apply in admitting the stray animal:
Stray animals with no identification are held for four days in an attempt to locate their owners. Animals with identification are held at our campus for ten days. In the event the owners do not reclaim their pet, we will place the animal up for adoption after the appropriate stray wait has expired. We ask that you fill out a questionnaire for each animal that you bring to our facility. Even though you found the animal, there is still important information we would like to have so that we may place the animal up for adoption in the event the owners cannot be located.
