Starting off on the right paw with your new cat can make all the difference for proper litterbox etiquette. Consider these suggestions when adopting a new cat or kitten or solving your current cat’s litterbox issues.
• The location of the litterbox should be conveniently located with some privacy. Basements, near washer/dryers or cold surfaces are not desirable.

• Most cats like fine-grained litter such as scoopable litters or high quality, dust-free clay litters. Most cats do not like scented or deodorant litters. Once you find a litter your cat likes, stick with it.

• There should be the same number of litterboxes as cats in the household plus one. Place them in different locations and in each level of your home.

• Litterboxes should be scooped daily for feces. The litter should be changed at least once a week.

• Most cats like about two inches of litter in the box, sometimes less if the cat is long-haired.

• If you catch your cat in the act of house soiling, interrupt with hand clapping only, immediately take him near the litterbox and praise him if he uses it.

• Do not scold your cat when finding house soiling after the fact. Punishment will only make him afraid of you, and he will not understand what he has done wrong.

• Clean soiled areas with an enzymatic cleaner to breakdown urine proteins and prevent future accidents.
