Owner Relinquishments
Call 505.255.5523 ext. 100. We will listen to you, provide you with tips and options, and if relinquishment seems the best option, have you bring your pet to our Main Campus, 615 Virginia St SE, for admission.
Strays
Animal Humane accepts stray cats and dogs found by the public.
- Animals with no identification are held for four days in an attempt to locate their owners.
- Animals with identification are held at our campus for ten days.
In the event the owners do not reclaim their pet, the animal will be available for adoption after the appropriate stray wait has expired.
We ask that you fill out a questionnaire for each animal that you bring to our facility. Even though you found the animal, any information you can provide will help us in the event that the owners cannot be located and the animal becomes available for adoption.
Additional steps you can take to help locate the animal's owners
- Place a free ad in the Albuquerque Journal
- List the animal on Craig's list
- File a lost/found report with Animal Humane
- File a lost/found report with the City of Albuquerque
- Have the animal scanned for a microchip (Animal Humane, City of Albuquerque, or any vet's office)
- Post flyers in the neighborhood where you found the animal
Admissions Process
To help us understand your pet and present them in the best light to potential adopters, please take some time to thoughtfully complete the appropriate questionnaire & bring it with you. If admitting your own pet, please bring their most recent veterinary records.

If you change your mind
The reclaim of an animal surrendered to Animal Humane is unlikely. If you are unsure as to whether or not to surrender an animal, please call and speak to one of the adoption advisors. We are happy to help you find alternatives to surrendering your pet. We understand what a hard decision this can be, and we are here to help.
Please call Animal Humane 505.255.5523 ext. 100 to discuss options that may be available to reclaim your pet. The reclaim of an animal is at the discretion of Animal Humane | New Mexico. Also note that no animal is released from Animal Humane without being spayed or neutered and microchipped. You must also pay for this service if necessary.
