Meet Your Match

The Meet Your Match™ (MYM) program is designed to increase the likelihood of matching shelter dogs six months and older with a well-matched home. Think of it as eHarmony.com, only for you and your future dog. Animal Humane profiles each dog, categorizing energy level, play preferences and other attributes. This helps you find a companion that suits your lifestyle. This initial compatibility between dog and adopter lays the foundation for the human + canine bond to develop, leading to a successful, permanent placement.

The MYM Canine-ality Adoption program has two components:

The Canine-ality Assessment The assessment evaluates the dog’s friendliness and sociability, playfulness, energy level and ability to focus, motivation and manners. The dogs are then given a color and description that identifies their personalities. Some are laid-back purple "couch potatoes," others are curious orange "busy bees," and some are action hero green "go-getter" types.

The Dog Adopter Survey: Adopters complete the one-page survey in just a few minutes when they arrive on campus. According to the preferences noted in the survey, each adopter is assigned a color that matches a Canine-ality category. In the Doggie Dorms, adopters can look at the kennel cards to identify well-suited dogs. Adopters aren't required to choose a dog only within their color category but the Canine-ality Assessment helps adopters have realistic expectations of their new companion and be ready to help the dog adjust once they arrive home.

Meet Your Match™

Animal Humane uses the ASPCA’s Meet Your Match™ program to determine each dog’s attributes. They’re then categorized and identified by color codes. Here’s a sampling of Canine-alities you’ll find at our campus.

Purple: Couch Potato
Like the easy life? Then I’m the perfect match for you. I’m a relaxed, laid-back kind of dog who enjoys long naps, watching movies, curling up on laps, and walking very short distances from the couch to the food bowl and back. (Internally motivated)

Orange: Busy Bee
I’m a naturally playful, curious, and trusting canine. Take me for a big walk every day; give me something to do. After my job’s done, I’ll curl up in front of the fire with you in the evenings. (Externally motivated)

Green: Go-Getter
Want to get more exercise? Action is my middle name. My “Let’s GO!” lifestyle will keep you motivated to get outside and move. I’ve got tons of energy; and just like the sun, I’m burning and working 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I’ll run for miles, chase a ball for hours, and still want to play at the end of the day. (Externally motivated)
