Training at Animal Humane uses reward-focused techniques designed to strengthen the relationship between you and your pet. Students are taught how to reinforce good behavior and remove rewards to discourage inappropriate behavior. Animal Humane does not promote choke chains or prong collars, but other, more humane training aids are used.

Puppy PreSchool
6-week course of training and socialization Ages: 8 weeks to 5 months

Start your puppy off on the right paw with playtime with other dogs and interactions with new people. Puppies will also receive training in general manners such as sit, down, stay and coming when called. Coaches will be available to answer questions about behavior issues such as housetraining, chewing and jumping up on people.

Civilized Canine
6-week course of training
Ages: 6 months of age and older

Is your dog new to training or could use a refresher course in basic obedience? Dogs will receive real-world basic obedience training in sit, down, stay, loose leash walking and coming when called. Common behavior issues such as housetraining, jumping up on people, mouthiness when excited will also be addressed.

Cost for our six-week classes is $50 when you sign up at the time of adopting a pet; $75 for Animal Humane alumni (previous adopters) and $100 for the public. Classes are held at our main campus at 615 Virginia Street SE.

Adoption Behavior Consultations

For Animal Humane adopters, we offer a free one-hour private consultation to discuss and offer solutions to behavioral issues you’re experiencing with your new companion. Our coaches are certified trainers with years of experience working with all kinds of behavior issues.

Prior to your consultation, we will ask you to fill out a questionnaire which we will review with you upon arrival. The consultation will last approximately one to 1.5 hours, and we request that you bring your dog with you. For adopters with cat behavior issues, we will conduct the consultation without your cat present.

During your consultation, we will discuss in-depth about your presenting issue(s) and provide you with a diagnosis and explanation of your pet’s behavior, a personalized treatment plan and materials for proper implementation of management and training techniques. If dog training is recommended, we will provide area referrals.

If you are an adopter and are interested in scheduling an appointment with one of our coaches, please call Animal Humane at 505.938.7900. Prior to your consultation, we will collect basic information about your pet’s issue(s), briefly explain the program and send you a questionnaire to complete.

Please note: If you are experiencing a behavior issue with your pet, please make an appointment with your veterinarian immediately. Sudden changes in behavior can be caused by underlying medical issues. A visit to the veterinarian can provide the relief your animal needs or rule out a medical cause to the behavior issue so that management and modification can begin.
