Bringing a new cat into your household can sometimes be a challenging experience. Here are some guidelines for a gradual introduction process for optimal success.
• Separate your new cat from your resident cat(s) for at least the first couple weeks.
• The new cat should have a sanctuary room with all the essentials.
• Feed the cats on opposite sides of a door so that the pleasant experience of eating is paired with the other cat.
• Use two socks and rub one on each cat. Place each sock with the opposite cat to allow him to experience the other cat’s scent.
• After a few days, switch the cats’ locations so they can investigate each other’s living spaces.
• At mealtimes, slightly open the door so the cats can begin to see each other. Use a door stop to prop the door ajar and as it’s open more widely, use a baby gate or screen. Reward with treats and use play for a positive association.
• If the interactions have been successful, feed the cats on opposite sides of a neutral room. Return the cats to their spaces after mealtimes but slowly add more time together if the interactions are relaxed and calm.
• As the cats are gradually integrated, make certain there are places to perch high, hide under and there is a litter box for each cat plus one.
